Montefili Gives a Historic Vineyard

A New Voice with Biancone Toscana Chardonnay 2024

Panzano in Chianti ( FI ) - In the wine world, some new releases arrive as a surprise. Others feel as though they have simply been waiting for the right moment to emerge. Such is the case with Biancone Toscana Chardonnay 2024, the latest wine from Vecchie Terre di Montefili, the renowned estate in Panzano in Chianti that has long been recognised as one of the most authentic and elegant expressions of Chianti Classico.

Internationally acclaimed for its refined and age-worthy Sangiovese wines, Montefili is now unveiling a different facet of its identity through a Chardonnay sourced from a small vineyard planted in 1982 at an altitude of nearly 500 metres above sea level.

Rather than representing a stylistic departure, Biancone is a natural extension of the estate’s philosophy — one rooted in careful observation, respect for the land and a commitment to expressing the true character of each vineyard site.

For more than four decades, this small parcel has quietly demonstrated remarkable potential, producing fruit with distinctive personality and balance. The decision to bottle it separately came not from market demand or changing trends, but from the conviction that the vineyard had developed a voice worthy of standing on its own.

Production remains intentionally limited to just 1,330 bottles, reinforcing Montefili’s focus on authenticity rather than scale.

Under the guidance of winemaker and agronomist Serena Gusmeri, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts followed by twelve months of ageing divided equally between stainless steel and oak, including tonneaux and barriques. The result is a Chardonnay that favours precision and transparency over power, allowing the vineyard’s character to remain firmly at the centre of the conversation.

The 2024 vintage opens with vibrant aromas of green apple, Conference pear and lime zest, complemented by delicate notes of elderflower and acacia blossom. On the palate, freshness, energy and a subtle saline edge create a wine that feels both expressive and remarkably poised.

More than a new label, Biancone represents an important milestone in Montefili’s ongoing journey. It reflects the same values that have defined the estate’s celebrated Sangiovese wines: elegance over force, detail over volume and a deep commitment to place.

At a time when authenticity has become one of the wine industry's most valuable currencies, Montefili demonstrates that innovation does not necessarily require reinvention. Sometimes it simply means recognising when a historic vineyard is finally ready to tell its own story.

With Biancone Toscana Chardonnay 2024, that story begins with clarity, confidence and unmistakable Tuscan character.
